This is a common question that personal trainers get from clients. The answer is a bit complicated but has very practical use for everyone who is either starting or looking to add to their current exercise program. Here are some questions to answer when determining how hard you should be training.
1- What are your fitness goals? This will help determine what training zone you should be in for your specific goals and needs.
2- Do you have any injuries and if so, how can you adapt your program to accommodate but not slow down your progress?
3- What is your max heart rate for your age (220 - your age)? This will help you determine what your 60-90% training zones are.
4- How often have you been working out and how often do you plan on going per week in the future? This will impact the intensity you can handle, to ensure you don’t get injured or over train.
Please be advised to use these questions as a guideline for the intensity level you should be working at. It is important to not compare yourself to others as that could put you in a dangerous position physically. Be sure to consult with your physician before starting any kind of exercise program if you have a history of health problems.
